Great book. We already have in our small town, two bowl restaurants and though I LOVE Poke Bowls and Playa Bowls (health bowls with smoothie type ingredients), it''s really expensive to eat there regularly. So what''s next best (or even better) are your own and here are recipes by America''s Test Kitchen so they are well crafted recipes that have been put together with skill and thought.

So what kind of bowls? First, I looked for Poke, which are a specialty of Hawaii and the one time I was in Hawaii, that ended up about all of us would eat because they are so good. Generally, the bowls are a kind of "scattered sushi" (fish on rice with seasoning) The poke bowl recipe here is pan-seared tuna with mango, avocado and salad but not Japanese rice, so it''s lighter and really, it''s what the French call "salad compose" or composed salad, one you build in the bowl. I was surprised NOT to see more Poke recipes nor are there any for the health bowls like acai bowls that we get at another "bowl restaurant."

What you do get is a way not only to follow recipes but to build your own with a repertoire of ingredients that you can prepare ahead if you want, such as vinaigrette, tzatziki, dressings, crunchy toppings, ramen noodles, "zoodles" (veg shaved noodle strips) etc. Then you can toss together people''s favorites into a good combination and really make a quick meal from ingredients on hand.

If you are doing chicken you can keep poached chicken strips (try them using a sous-vide cooker, they come out very juicy) or tuna, or vegetarian beans.

While I was a bit disappointed not to see some of the traditional Hawaiian recipes I really love, I do love the book''s instructions on how to build bowls and keep ingredients handy that will make a quick meal. These bowls are very good for kids as you can customize to their tastes or use up leftovers, and good for people watching what they are eating for health as salads can get boring and a lot of these "bowls" are really salads with entree toppings.

I love ATK books. I have many hard copies that I rely on regularly for recipes and as a reference resource when I''m researching a technique or ingredient. I ordered ''Bowls '' as a kindle book and find it really difficult to follow the recipes because of the format. Cookbook editors need to realize the importance of listing the directions on the same page as the instructions, especially in ebook format. The recipes take you back and forth for various instructions used in the particular dish which may work better in hard copy but is frustratingly cumbersome in an ebook. I will rely on this as a go-to book in my library but with reservations if I feel the recipe is too complicated to endure the aggravation of clicking back and forth between the various parts of the book. Also in ebook format you don''t get context as well as you can in a hard copy book. No more kindle recipe books for me!

This cookbook rocks! ATK produces excellent books, but this one is truly outstanding. It is produced and published thoughtfully and lovingly, well bound, good quality paper, lies flat. Each recipe is accompanied by a gloriously colorful and inspirational photo. There are a lot of recipes and photos. Even before looking at the written recipe you can tell what it contains just by looking at the photo. The recipes are legible, clearly outlined, seem to strike a balance in terms of the number of ingredients. Each recipe is written for two servings, but can be easily multiplied. A very thoughtful and practical addition is a calorie number posted near the recipe title. More detailed nutritional information is posted in the back of the book. The recipes are varied drawing from various culinary cultures and traditions, but are also approachable even for a novice cook. I believe that this will appeal to vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters who enjoy vegetable forward dishes. I appreciate ATK''s inclusion of variations, enhancements and alternative ingredient suggestions accompanying each recipe. The simple pickle recipes, dressings and other topping creations look wonderful. My only wish is that the book included a dust cover/jacket. Thanks ATK, one of your best, love this book - no regrets! Definitely recommend.

I love cooking and I am a big fan of America''s Test Kitchen- the recipes are delicious and very fail proof.
My problem with this cookbook is it is very tedious and somewhat joyless.
The back of the cookbook has a lot of shared ingredients, like dressings, toppings, cooked vegetables and proteins, with many different variations. These recipes for shared ingredients tell you how to make more than you need for a bowl recipe, so you can use the leftovers for a different bowl. It sounds very convenient but I find myself getting frustrated and overwhelmed by the way the book handles it.
If I, say, make a rainbow salad bowls, I will have leftover roast beets, tempeh, and orange dressing. This means I have to either make more rainbow salad bowls, or go through the book to find a recipe that uses some of the leftover ingredients. Which creates more leftover ingredients. I feel like I''m on a treadmill. In the end I just feel overwhelmed by this book. I feel like I need to make a spreadsheet to figure this out.

Beautiful book, lots of inspiring pictures and ideas. I’ve made several recipes so far, and would rate most of them as about four-star meals—very good, but perhaps not home-runs. Today I tried the Tun Poke Bowl, though, and it was a truly outstanding recipe. This recipe alone is worth the price of the book. It’s amazing. I am also finding that many of the little details are excellent—the pickled carrots, the seed brittle...these are terrific and creative little touches to really kick up your bowl game. Overall, very good and recommended if you’re ready for some new salad, grain, and soup ideas.

This book will have your mouth water. The recipies look good and taste good. I bought 3 books of America''s test kitchen and they know what they''re doing. I''m trying to eat more vegetarian and this book is a great introduction on how to make veggies more attractive and also on how to use a wide variety of grains/pastas etc. The book is well built including different chapters : salads, noodles, rice and grains, soups, etc. and a section at the end on how to pickle veggies, how to build your own bowl (I think?), how to make the sauces and such like informations. Very clearly written. *Info : Eating bowls doesn''t make cooking much simpler (you''ll see your fridge is going to be packed with a variety of jars (sauces, cut veggies, pickled veggies, etc.). There''s a lot of separate ingredients to cut and prepare. The advantage is, once that''s all prepared, you can thrown a bowl together rather quickly and if you keep a good stash, you can vary it daily. Anyway, I recommand!
